Journalists Attacked

Daniel Pearl

Daniel Pearl, the South Asia correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped in January 2002 in Pakistan and was murdered by his captors the next month.

In January 2021, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the release of Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh, and acquitted him and three others of murder charges in Pearl’s case. The ruling came despite written evidence presented to the court and signed by Sheikh in which he confessed to a role in the kidnapping,

In nearly 8 out of 10 cases, the murderers of journalists go free. CPJ is waging a global campaign against impunity.

The Committee to Protect Journalists promotes press freedom worldwide.

We defend the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal.
