Four years after the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, there are still concerns about the safety of reporters in the country. Authorities must pursue full criminal justice for Caruana Galizia’s murder and implement broader press freedom reforms, CPJ and other free speech organizations said in a statement during a joint mission to mark the anniversary of the journalist’s death. Moscow, Russia Anna Politkovskaya, 48, a journalist renowned for her critical coverage of the Chechen conflict, was found slain in her apartment building in Moscow on October 7, 2006.
While authorities have convicted several people in connection with her murder, her family’s lawyers told CPJ that the mastermind was never held accountable, and “Anna Politkovskaya’s killing remains unsolved.”
