Ways to Give

CPJ’s work relies solely on your generosity and support. Here are the various ways you can help CPJ defend journalists and press freedom around the world.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to someone in the Development department, please email us at [email protected] or call us at 212-300-9025. We’d be happy to hear from you.

The easiest way to support CPJ is to donate online at cpj.org/donate. You will immediately be issued an acknowledgment letter for your tax-deductible gift, which will serve as a receipt.

You may also choose to give online via PayPal, or make a gift through Facebook or Instagram

If you choose to donate by mail, please make checks payable to the “Committee to Protect Journalists” and mail to:

Committee to Protect Journalists
Knight Foundation Press Freedom Center
Development Department
P.O. Box 2675
New York, NY 10108

If you’d like to make a gift over the phone, please call us at (212) 300-9025.

Memorial or honorary gifts

You can also donate in honor of or in memory of a loved one, friend, or journalist. When donating online, select that the gift is in honor or in memory and enter the recipient’s name and information.

If it is an honor gift, please enter contact information for the honoree, whom we will notify through an e-card. If it is a memorial gift, please enter contact information for the next of kin. We will notify them of your memorial gift through an e-card.

If you are donating by mail, include the recipient’s contact information with the check, and we will notify the recipient of your gift.

Monthly giving

To sign up to be a recurring donor, select “Monthly Gift” when you fill out the online donation form. You can also contact the Development department by phone or email to help you arrange this gift. It can be as little as $5, but to us — and the journalists we help — it’ll make a huge difference.

As a monthly donor, you rank among our most dedicated supporters as your recurring gift allows us to forecast the future. Thank you for your support.

Build your own fundraiser

Are you running a marathon and want to support CPJ? Do you have a birthday coming up that you’d like to dedicate to CPJ? Or would you like to ask your friends to direct their giving in memory of a loved one?

We have a special tool that will allow you to host your own fundraiser for CPJ — to which you can invite friends, family, and colleagues to contribute. Click here to begin building your own fundraiser.

Securities and wire transfer

It’s easy to transfer stock or fund shares, which provide an immediate charitable tax deduction for the full fair-market value of the gifts. You can use our online tool for gifts of stock here. Alternatively, you can download information to provide to your broker.

We encourage you to contact us to let us know (at [email protected]) if you are transferring stock and to tell us how many shares you are providing so we can send you an acknowledgment letter for tax purposes.

If you would like to send a gift directly from your banking institution to ours, you can use our wiring instructions here to do so. Please let us know in advance if you intend to wire a gift to CPJ so we can properly acknowledge your gift.

Donor-advised funds

A donor-advised fund is a tax-deductible charitable giving account that you donate to and invest in over time. There are many different types of these funds.

You can use the widget below to search for your donor-advised fund.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

You are able to transfer funds from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) as a Qualified Charitable Distribution once you are 70½ or older. To make such a gift, you will need to contact your IRA administrator and ask for funds to be transferred to CPJ.

We are happy to provide any additional information to the administrator.

Matched giving

Many employers will match their employees’ charitable gifts. When you fill out your company’s charitable giving form, be sure to list CPJ and, in case it’s required, include our Federal Tax Identification Number (13-3081500). Some companies will even match donations made by spouses or retirees, so it’s always a good idea to check.

You can now check on our donation page to see if your company matches gifts.

Host or attend an event

Many of our supporters choose to host an event and donate the proceeds to CPJ. While we are thrilled to have the support, please note that we are not affiliated with the effort and therefore cannot sponsor the event. Many of our materials are publicly available and are fair use, based on Creative Commons licensing. We do appreciate you reaching out to us to let us know about the fundraiser, and we certainly appreciate all of your support!

In-kind donations

In-kind donations and services can make a significant difference to CPJ. For more information, please contact CPJ’s Development department at [email protected]

Cryptocurrency

CPJ now supports gifts of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrency through the Giving Block, which offers a secure way to transfer these assets. Similar to a donation of stock, the IRS treats cryptocurrency as property, making a gift of crypto to CPJ tax-deductible. For CPJ’s cryptocurrency donation page, click here.

Legacy giving

CPJ can help you plan your legacy for lasting impact, which will enable us to continue helping journalists in the future. Check out our legacy giving page, which highlights options from life insurance to retirement plans to preparing a bequest.

Thank you for your interest in CPJ, and for helping us to defend journalists and press freedom around the world.
