A freelance journalsit and one of the founding leaders of the Arab Socialist Nasserist Party, Sabahi was arrested in February 1991, reportedly by order of the minister of the interior under state of emergency legislation. Sabahi was detained two days after he gave a speech at Cairo University opposing the Gulf War. He is held in Abu-Zaabal Prison.
