Patricia Ramírez González, also known by her nickname Paty Bunbury, was shot by a single, unidentified individual at around 2 p.m. on October 30, 2024, in the eatery she ran in Colima’s state capital as a side job to her work as an entertainment journalist, according to a statement by the Colima state prosecutor’s office (FGE).

Ramírez González, 39, was an entertainment reporter for the privately owned Hechos newspaper and the second Mexican journalist killed in less than 24 hours following the October 29, 2024, shooting of Mauricio Cruz Solís. The killings occurred during the first month of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.

Mario Alberto Gaitán, vice president of local journalists’ association Periodistas Colimenses, told CPJ that Ramírez had not reported receiving threats.

The FGE has not stated whether it is investigating her reporting as a possible motive and did not answer several phone calls from CPJ for comment.
