Taj al-Sir Ahmed Suleiman, director of the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) in North Darfur state, was killed in the last week of November 2025, along with his brother, after fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group allegedly entered their home in the Al-Daraga neighborhood of El-Fasher and executed them, according to SUNA and two local journalists who spoke to CPJ on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.
Suleiman had been missing since October 26, 2025, when the RSF captured El-Fasher in its push to control all of Darfur and establish a parallel government. He was last heard from while attempting to flee the city and was among several journalists and media workers reported missing after the RSF takeover. SUNA said in a statement that he had continued reporting and documenting developments in El-Fasher until his final moments.
Since the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF began in April 2023, CPJ has documented the killings of at least 15 journalists and media workers in Sudan.
CPJ contacted the RSF through its website to request comment on Suleiman’s killing and on his earlier disappearance, but did not receive a response.
