Iranian security forces arrested Nastaran Farokheh on November 28, 2022.

Farokheh is a reporter covering social and political local news for the state-run semi-reformist Shargh Daily.

According to a source with knowledge of Farokheh’s case who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal, Farokheh covered national protests for Shargh Daily ahead of her arrest.

Protests in Iran began in mid-September following the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law.

Farokheh was arrested from her home in Tehran and security forces confiscated her personal devices, Shargh Daily reported. According to the exile-run Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the journalist’s whereabouts are unknown. CPJ was unable to determine what, if any charges she faces or the status of her health in prison.

Authorities arrested dozens of journalists as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several were later released on bail.

CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
