Iranian security forces arrested Iranian journalist Ehsan Pirbornash on October 28, 2022, from his home in Tehran.

Pirbornash covers sports news for the state-run Iran Varzeshii newspaper, where his wife, Behnaz Mirmotaharian, also works.

Prior to his arrest, he reported via Twitter on the protests following the September 16 death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law. His Twitter account has since been suspended.

The journalist was arrested in front of his family, according to a tweet by his wife.

CPJ was unable to determine what, if any, charges Pirbornash faces, where he is held, or his health status in custody.

Authorities arrested dozens of journalists as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several of them were later released on bail.

CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
