Ahmed Abu Skheil, a Palestinian photographer for the Gaza-based Al-Elamya News Agency was killed when Israeli warplanes bombed the Fahd al-Sabah School in the al-Tuffah neighborhood in eastern Gaza City on the morning of November 9, 2024.

Abu Skheil, 25, was housed in the school alongside hundreds of people, including his sister and fellow journalist Zahraa Abu Skheil, 22, and their father after they were displaced from their home in the al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City.

“At around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Israeli warplanes bombed the school while they were sleeping in one of its classrooms, which led to the martyrdom of my father, Zahraa, and Ahmed, along with a number of displaced people,” the journalist’s brother, Ali Abu Skheil, told CPJ

CPJ previously spoke with Zahraa Abu Skheil to obtain information about the killing of her three cousins, journalists Mohamed El Sayed Abu Skheil, Tariq Al-Sayed Abu Sakhil, and Mohammed Adel Abu Skheil. The three were killed by the Israeli occupation army in March 2024 inside the Al-Shifa Medical Complex.

CPJ’s email to the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk asking whether the military knew there was a journalist in the area it attacked and whether Abu Skheil was targeted for his work did not immediately receive a response.
