Iranian authorities arrested Kurdish Iranian photojournalist and documentary filmmaker Adel Karimi on October 11, 2022.

He was arrested in his hometown of Mahabad in West Azerbaijan province, exile-based news site IranWire reported. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) also reported on his arrest, citing the Iranian Photojournalism Association.

According to IranWire, Karimi is detained in Urmia Central Detention Center, where he has had to submit to multiple interrogations. He has not been charged yet.

CPJ is unable to determine the status of the journalist’s health in custody.

Karimi was arrested in the course of a crackdown on protests following the September 16 death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law. Authorities arrested dozens of journalists as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several were later released on bail.

CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
