Abdi editor-in-chief of the radical daily Salam, was sentenced by the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court on December 22, 1993, to one year in prison and a suspended sentence of 40 lashes. He had been arrested in late August. The charges were never made public, but it is believed that they stemmed from a report published in Salam about the opposition of government officials to the admission of dissident religious leader AyatoIIah Hossein Ali Montazeri to a Tehran hospital.
