Advisory Groups

In 2015 and 2016, CPJ established advisory groups for its programs. The groups, which are made up of leading journalists, experts, and press freedom advocates, provide feedback on CPJ programs' key advocacy proposals and strategies. The groups' members also advise CPJ staff on how to achieve greater impact and help CPJ gain access and increase outreach in countries where they have influence and expertise.



Americas Advisory Group

  • Andrés Oppenheimer, columnist for The Miami Herald, host of "Oppenheimer Presenta" on CNN, and chair of CPJ's Americas Advisory Group
  • Rosental Calmon Alves, director of the Knight Center for Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin
  • Ricardo Uceda, executive director of the Lima-based Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (Institute for Press and Society), or IPYS
  • Adela Navarro Bello, editor of the weekly Mexican newspaper Zeta
  • Andrés Morales, a Colombian lawyer and program specialist for the social and human sciences sector at the UNESCO officein Montevideo, Uruguay



Europe and Central Asia Advisory Group

  • Miklós Haraszti, former OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and current United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus
  • Maria (Masha) Lipman, Russian media and policy analyst and editor of the Russian-language journal Counterpoint
  • Andrei Soldatov, Russian investigative journalist, author, and editor of Agentura.ru, a news platform specializing in Russia's intelligence services
  • Borja Bergareche, director of innovation at the Spanish media holding company Vocento and a longtime CPJ consultant



Middle East and North Africa Advisory Group

  • Lina Ejeilat, co-founder and executive editor of 7iber, an online magazine that covers Jordan and the Arab world
  • Yara Bader, journalist, human rights activist, and co-founder of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression
  • Siamak Ghaderi, Iranian freelance journalist and recipient of CPJ's 2014 International Press Freedom Award



Technology Advisory Group

  • Ory Okolloh, a lawyer, blogger, and activist who co-founded Ushahidi, a free open-source platform for crowdsourcing crisis information
  • Rebecca MacKinnon, co-founder of the citizen media website Global Voices Online and a CPJ board member
  • Xiao Qiang, adjunct professor at the UC Berkeley School of Information and founder and editor-in-chief of the news website China Digital Times
  • Sue Gardner, advisor, consultant and board member to Internet freedom-related organizations and former executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation
  • Ross LaJeunesse, global head of free expression and international relations at Google
  • Bruce Schneier, an internationally renowned security technologist based in the U.S.
  • Mohamad Najem, advocacy and policy director at Social Media Exchange, a media advocacy and development organization based in Lebanon



CPJ is also establishing advisory groups for Africa and Asia.
