Iranian security forces arrested Iranian journalist Maryam Vahidian on November 28, 2022.
Vahidian is a freelance reporter covering political and cultural local news for a variety of news websites and newspapers including the state-run semi-reformist Shargh Daily.
Vahidian was arrested in the early morning of November 28 from her home in Tehran, exile-run Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and Shargh Daily reported. Her laptop, phone, and other personal devices were confiscated.
Her arrest came during a crackdown on protests following the September 16 death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law. Authorities arrested dozens of journalists as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several were later released on bail.
CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
