Iranian security forces arrested Iranian Kurdish journalist Fardin Kamanagar on October 7, 2022.
Kamangar is the editor in chief of the semi-independent Kurdish news magazine Goran Magazine. He is the former head of the semi state-run trade group Iran Media Association. He previously reported for state run newspaper JameJam Daily.
Goran Magazine, where Kamanager also contributes reporting, covered protests against the September 16 death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, after morality police arrested her for allegedly violating the country’s conservative dress law.
According to exile-run news website IranWire, Kamanger was arrested in Sananadaj in Kurdistan province, and security forces beat him on the head, causing him to bleed.
CPJ was unable to determine where the journalist is held, what, if any charges he may face, and the status of his health in custody.
Authorities arrested dozens of journalists as the protests over Amini’s death spread across the country. Several of them were later released on bail.
CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in late 2022 for comment on the cases of imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
