New York, October 21, 2021–The Committee to Protect Journalists will publish its annual list of countries where journalists are murdered regularly and their killers go free on October 28, 2021. The launch of the report, “Killers of journalists still get away with murder: CPJ’s 2021 Global Impunity Index,” comes just days ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2, 2021.
The report will also set the stage for the opening ceremony of the People’s Tribunal, to be held in The Hague, the Netherlands, on November 2, 2021. Part of A Safer World For The Truth initiative, the Tribunal will run five hearings, culminating in May 2022 on World Press Freedom Day, and will indict the governments of Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Syria for failing to deliver justice for the murders of individual journalists. It will feature expert legal analysis and witness testimony from the families and colleagues of murdered journalists on impunity and obstacles to justice. Read the full program and register here.
