The Committee to Protect Journalists today joined a group of partner organizations to express concern over the lack of progress into the murder investigation of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Along with the journalist’s family, the group of organizations calls on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to appoint a special rapporteur to monitor the ongoing murder investigation.
Caruana Galizia, a prominent blogger who reported on government corruption, was killed on October 16, 2017, when the car that she was driving exploded.
The press release also brings attention to serious threats to media freedom the Council of Europe Platform for the Promotion of Journalism and the Protection of Journalists recorded in 2017, and calls on member states to adhere to the Council of Europe’s guidelines on effective investigations.
