CPJ calls on Mohamedoun Daddah, Mauritania’s ambassador to the United States, to meet to discuss the wrongful imprisonment of blogger Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mohamed, who was scheduled to be released in late 2017.

Turkish appeals court upholds prison sentences for Cumhuriyet staff

Istanbul, February 19, 2019–The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the Istanbul appeals court’s decision today to uphold the terrorism-related convictions of the staff of pro-opposition daily newspaper Cumhuriyet.

Egypt expels New York Times correspondent, detains local journalist on false news charges

Washington, D.C., February 19, 2019–The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns yesterday’s detention and expulsion of New York Times correspondent David D. Kirkpatrick and the ongoing detention of Egyptian journalist Ahmed Gamal Ziada, and calls on Egyptian authorities to allow journalists to travel into the country and report freely.

CPJ joins call for Turkey to release jailed journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists today joined 47 members of the European Parliament and other press freedom organizations to call on Turkey to end its crackdown on the press and the mass imprisonment of journalists.

Ugandan authorities arrest BBC journalists investigating black market drug sales

Nairobi, February 7, 2019–The Committee to Protect Journalists today called on Ugandan authorities to immediately release a team of three journalists and one media worker detained in connection with their investigative reporting and to drop any investigation into a fourth journalist, who is part of the same team.
