The Knight Press Freedom Center is the Committee to Protect Journalists’ space for press freedom advocates and journalists to come together. Located in New York City (just a few minutes walk from Times Square), CPJ offers shared hot desks, private meeting rooms and event spaces for up to 100 people (see the FAQs for the capacity of specific rooms) While CPJ does not charge a fee for use, we do suggest donations on a tiered basis. No one eligible will be turned away due to lack of funds.
CPJ also hosts monthly Journalist Solidarity Socials on the last Wednesday of the month at the Knight Press Freedom Center that are open to all in the sector. For more information about upcoming socials, visit CPJ’s Eventbrite.
CPJ is deeply grateful to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and other generous donors for their support.
Anyone who works as a journalist or who advocates for the rights of journalists can request to use the space.
CPJ offers its space as a coworking space for individuals and groups on a hot desk basis, meaning guests will not have access to the same desk but are able to book and access available desks or rooms. These desks can be in private rooms, or shared open space at communal desks.
You can request a coworking membership by filling out this form or clicking the button below. Once your request to cowork is approved, you can come in as many days of the week you would like for one month. Please discuss with the Office Coordinator about the length of your membership and membership renewals. Coworking is usually available from 9 am to 5 pm from Mondays through Thursdays.
While CPJ does not charge a fee for use, we do suggest donations on a tiered basis. No one eligible will be turned away due to lack of funds. The below suggested payment structure includes not only the use of the desk(s), but also use of conference rooms, phone booths, and amenities in the break room as available.

CPJ also offers its space for events. CPJ’s event spaces includes the following rooms:
Both formal and casual events can be hosted in the Knight Press Freedom Center. Formal events include things such as panels, lectures, and book launches, while casual events include things such as meetings, receptions, and brown bag lunches. Events can hold at most 266 people per CPJ’s fire code regulations. Regarding timing, events should be evenly spaced out as determined by the CPJ team.
You can request to host your event at the Knight Press Freedom Center by filling out this form or clicking the button below.
CPJ does not charge a set fee for the use of the Knight Press Freedom Center for events, but does recommend a donation made to CPJ on a sliding scale basis based on the organizer’s annual operating budget. No one eligible will be turned away due to lack of funds.
The use of CPJ’s space for coworking and events is contingent upon availability. CPJ’s space is open Monday through Friday during business hours, and after hours events can be discussed on a case-by-case basis. CPJ may occasionally close the office to guests for things such as inclement weather, holidays, and internal CPJ events. Guests with coworking memberships will be notified ahead of time so they can plan accordingly.
