Launch of CPJ’s2013 Impunity Index featured at official World Press Freedom Day events in New York and San José, Costa Rica.

UNESCO’sofficial World Press Freedom Day celebration with 300 global participants included a CPJ panel on good practices for safety of journalists and impunity. We also hosted a side meeting, called “Research, Action, Results: Strategy Discussion for Combating Impunity,” with press freedom groups, journalists, and academics.

CPJ’sAsia Program Coordinator Bob Dietz will launched a special report on China in Hong Kong’sForeign Correspondents Club. The panel discussion was moderated by CPJ board member David Schlesinger.

CPJ Senior Program Coordinator for the Americas presented findings from Attacks on the Press at a seminar in Sao Paulo. The event was hosted by ABRAJI.

CPJ released Attacks on the Press: Journalism on the World’sFrontlines, a yearly assessment of the state of press freedom worldwide. The 2013 edition features up-to-the-minute analyses by CPJ and global experts on media conditions, along with regional data, in close to 60 countries. CPJ held its 22nd International Press Freedom Awards in New York City and honored four journalists who defied perilous conditions to report the news.

Carlos Lauría, CPJ’ssenior Americas program coordinator, participated in a panel discussion after the screening of the film Reportero at the Bronx Documentary Center in New York. He was joined by the filmmaker Bernardo Ruiz.

CPJ collaborated with Human Rights Watch and screened three films at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival. The films, Words of Wisdom, Silenced Voices, and Reportero, premiered at Lincoln Center.
