Zahraa Muhammad al-Hassan, a reporter at Nyala State Radio, was arrested by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on February 28, 2026, in Nyala, South Darfur, along with several other women, including journalists, and taken to Korea prison in the city. Al-Hassan was released on September 6, 2026.
Al-Hassan was detained for more than a week without explanation, formal charges, or court hearing, according to news reports, and a local journalist who spoke to CPJ on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal.
According to a member of the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, who spoke to CPJ on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, women recently released from the detention facility told the families of the journalists that Al-Hassan had lost significant weight and was suffering from fever, and other untreated health complications due to lack of medical care.
CPJ contacted the RSF through its website to request comment on Al-Hassan’s detention but did not receive a response.
