Yağız Barut, a freelance reporter, was among the field reporters and photojournalists who were taken into custody during the protests which erupted following the imprisonment of Istanbul’s opposition Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in March 2025. Barut was detained while covering the protests in the western city of Izmir.
Izmir police took Barut into custody on March 24 at the field, and he was released by a court pending investigation on March 27.
CPJ’s email requesting comment from the chief prosecutor’s office in Izmir did not receive a reply.
