Xu, a co- founder of the outspoken April Fifth Forum, was arrested in October 1981 and sentenced in June 1982 to 15 years in prison. In 1985, an account he wrote of his trial and treatment while in prison was smuggled out of China and published in the West. Thereafter he was treated more severely by his captors.
