An investigative reproter with the Communist paper al-Midan, al-Zeili was arrested in August 1989, apparently because of his affiliation with a Comunist publication. At the time of his arrest, the reporter was conducting an invesitgation into alleged human rights violations by militias in the western part of Sudan.
