Unknown assailants shot and killed Salomón Ordóñez, the founder and editor of the Facebook-based Shalom Cuetzalan Producciones, at approximately 8 p.m. on June 23, 2025, in Cuetzalan, a town 110 miles northeast of Mexico City. Witnesses found Ordóñez with at least two gunshot wounds; he died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Ordóñez, 40, primarily covered cultural news and local political events, sharing them with his news site’s more than 75,000 followers — a substantial number in Cuetzalan, which has a population of 50,000. His coverage made him a popular figure in the community, according to a report by SPD Noticias.
One journalist from the region, who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal, said Ordóñez did not cover sensitive political topics, corruption, or organized crime in the area.
The Puebla state government, in a Facebook statement released June 24, said the office of the state prosecutor (FGE) is investigating the attack. CPJ’s several calls to the FGE were unanswered.
CPJ was unable to confirm whether Ordóñez had been threatened before his killing or source contact information for his family.
