On September 27, 2026, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian writer, analyst, and regular contributor to the independent Al-Quds newspaper, Rasem Obeidat.
According to his son Malek, and his lawyer Naser Odeh, Obeidat was detained in his home in Jabal Mukabbir, Jerusalem, and taken to Moscovia Detention Center, also in Jerusalem.
His son told CPJ that Israeli authorities extended his detention to September 30, pending investigation, and refused Obeidat access to his heart and diabetes medication while in custody.
Odeh told CPJ that the interrogation was surrounding Obeidat’s journalism, and that investigators accused him of joining an “illegal group” without specifying the name of the group.
CPJ emailed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to clarify the reasons for his arrest, the allegations that he was denied access to his medication, and his overall detention conditions. The IDF has not yet responded.
