Güdenoğlu, Konya bureau chief of the socialist weekly magazine Mucadele, was arrested, charged, tried, and convicted under Article 168 of the penal code (belonging to an illegal organization). He was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for alleged membership in the outlawed leftist organization Devrimci Sol (also known as Dev Sol). His prosecution is part of the state’s long-standing pattern of harassment of Mucadele and its employees.
Güdenoğlu was reportedly confined in Nigde Prison. At the end of 1999, however, CPJ was unable to confirm whether Gudenoglu was still in prison and is continuing its research into the case.
