Al-Mardi, a journalist with Al-Sahah al-Tijariya and an editor at Al-Hadaf daily, was arrested in May 1990 and was sentenced in August 1990 to 14 years in prison on charges of illegal possession of a mimeograph machine, distribution of illegal literature, and “waging war against the state.”
