Free-lance journalist Wajdee was arrested in connection with an article he wrote for the daily Haveeru alleging that government officials regularly bought votes and used “strong arm tactics” to influence voters during presidential and general elections. Wajdee had been detained several times in 1990 for articles published in Hukuru, a weekly newspaper he edited that was banned the same year.
