Egyptian authorities arrested freelance journalist and columnist Mohamed Mostafa Moussa in November 2022, without disclosing the reason for the arrest or the charges against him.

Moussa is a freelance journalist and political columnist for various local independent news websites including 180News, el-Bawaba News, el-Youm el-Sabe, and Masr al-Arabia, according to a local journalist with knowledge of Moussa’s case who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal.

On November 7, state security officers arrested Moussa from his home in Alexandria, according to news reports and the local journalist. CPJ was unable to determine where the journalist was taken. Moussa writes about politics and has criticized Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in his work.

Moussa suffers from severe heart problems that require daily medication, and his family is not sure if he is receiving his medication in custody, according to news reports and the local journalist.

The Ministry of Interior, which oversees the police, the prison system, and the prosecutor general’s office, did not answer CPJ’s emails requesting comment on Moussa’s case in November 2022.
