On March 23, 2026, Israeli soldiers raided the home of freelance journalist Lama Khater, in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, and arrested her.
Her husband, Hazem Fakhouri told CPJ they were not informed of the charges against her and that she was taken to an unknown location, before being informed that she was at the Moscovia Detention Centre in Jerusalem.
On March 30, 2026, an Israeli court ordered Khater to four months of administrative detention.
On July 21, 2026, her detention was extended for another four months according to Fakhoury, who told CPJ she was then being held at the Damon Prison near Haifa.
Fakhoury told CPJ that Khater was suffering from pain in one of her elbows due to the beatings she received, and that the prison had excessively high levels of humidity.
CPJ emailed the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on Khater’s arrest but did not immediately receive a reply.
CPJ later emailed the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) and the Israeli military for comments on Khater’s treatment in prison.
The IPS did not immediately reply, but the Israeli army said that “in general, the abuse of detainees while in custody violates the law and IDF orders and is therefore strictly prohibited.”
Khater was previously arrested in 2018 and 2023. Her testimony from the 2023 arrest was included in a CPJ special report published in February 2026, which compiles the accounts of 58 journalists, and the patterns of abuse, torture, and mistreatment against Palestinian journalists in Israeli prisons.
