Ethnic Kazakh journalist Kairat Domalin is held in pre-trial detention on undisclosed charges. Police in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang region, arrested Domalin, a television presenter for the state-run broadcaster Xinjiang Television, in April 2024, and have held him incommunicado since then.
Domalin is a regular host for the travel program “Zholaushy” (Traveler) on Xinjiang Television network’s Kazakh-language channels. His arrest was first reported by Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights, a human rights organization based in Kazakhstan, in June 2024, and later reported by the U.S. Congress-funded Radio Free Asia.
CPJ was unable to determine what, if any, charges Domalin faced or other details about his arrest.
Atajurt Kazakh Human Rights told CPJ that they had no information on Domalin’s whereabout as of late 2024.
As of late 2024, the Urumqi Public Security Bureau had not responded to CPJ’s request for comment sent via messaging app.
