Juan Fernando Núñez Guevara, was shot and killed by gunmen near the town of La Libertad in northwestern Peru on Dec. 6, 2025, according to Peruvian authorities

Núñez, director of the Facebook-based news site Kamila TV in La Libertad, was shot and killed by motorcycle gunmen while he was riding as a passenger on his brother’s motorcycle, according to the National Journalists Association. A security camera video shows the gunmen accelerating to reach Núñez’s motorcycle, which crashes during the shooting, then speeding away after the attack.

The journalist’s brother, David Núñez Guevara, who was driving their motorcycle, was hit by two bullets and hospitalized for 48 days but survived.

On January 15, 2026, Peruvian police arrested Marco Lara Cruzado in connection with Núñez’s killing and said that the suspected shooter, a 16-year-old boy, had also been detained.

At a news conference, La Libertad police chief Gen. Franco Moreno said the attack may have been carried out in retaliation of Núñez’s journalistic work as he was a frequent critic of local government officials.

Citing police sources, the Lima-based Institute for Press and Society said that criminals in El Milagro prison in the Pacific-coast city of Trujillo conspired to kill Núñez and paid local gang members 4,000 sols ($1,160) to carry out the attack.
