Talavera, acting director of the paper El Diario, was arrested on June 14, 1989 and charged with support for terrorism in an article about a June 1989 armed attack on then-President Alan Garcia’s bodyguards. Responsibility was claimed by Sendero Luminoso. In November 1991 Talavera was sentenced to five years in prison.
