On April 16, 2025, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian journalist Ibrahim Abu Safiya during a raid on his home in the village of Beit Sira, west of Ramallah in the central West Bank. Abu Safiya was subsequently placed under administrative detention.
According to his brother, Salem, who spoke to CPJ, Abu Safiya had first been transferred to Etzion detention center and then moved to Ofer Prison. In April, Israeli authorities issued a four-month administrative detention order against him. Since then, the order has been renewed twice for the same duration. The latest renewal is set to expire on April 13, 2026.
Abu Safiya was detained previously in 2024 and has reported mistreatment and abuse in Israeli prisons.
CPJ emailed the International Press Desk of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on Abu Safiya’s detention but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
