Police arrested dissident writer Chinh in Hanoi in June 1995. He was convicted on Nov. 8 of violating the interests of the state by writing and distributing documents criticizing the government and was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Chinh had written essays criticizing the Communist Party’s monopoly on power and had demanded the rehabilitation of party members purged in the 1960s. Chinh, the former director of the Institute of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, was previously jailed from 1967 to 1973 and from 1981 to 1987 for alleged “revisionism”.
