Hassan Al-Qishawi, a Palestinian freelance photographer who worked for the Indonesian news site Gaza Media and its affiliated humanitarian organization INH, was killed on January 2, 2025, in an Israeli drone strike in western Gaza City while documenting the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike, according to the Beirut-based press freedom organization SKeyes, news reports, and his brother, who spoke to CPJ.
The journalist began filming the airstrike’s impact on his cellphone because he did not have his camera with him, said Hashem Al-Qishawi, the journalist’s brother. “About half an hour later, another drone fired a missile at him, killing him instantly.”
Hassan Al-Qishawi, 30, worked as a photographer and filmmaker for several years, was married, and expecting his second child, his brother told CPJ.
Gaza Media said that Hassan had been part of its media team since 2018 and described him as a person with “above average morals.”
CPJ’s email to the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk asking whether the military knew there was a journalist in the area it attacked and whether Al Qishawi was targeted for his work did not immediately receive a response.
