On October 10, 2023, soldiers from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group killed journalist Halima Idris Salim when they ran over her and another person with a vehicle.

Salim, a 29-year-old reporter for local independent online news outlet Sudan Bukra, was covering the health conditions of the emergency wing of a hospital in Umbada, a suburb of the city of Omdurman, northwest of the capital of Khartoum, according to a statement circulated by the Sudanese National Syndicate and a local journalist following the case who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal.

Salim and her friend, who accompanied her on the reporting trip, were crossing the street to reach the hospital when they were hit. The journalist died from multiple fractures; her friend survived.

Salim covered the armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF and the impact on the Sudanese people for Sudan Bukra since the conflict broke out on April 15, 2023, according to those sources and CPJ’s review of her work.

CPJ’s emails to the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF received no response.
