Israeli forces arrested freelance Palestinian journalist Bushra Taweel on February 5, 2026, at the Ein Sinya military checkpoint near Ramallah, in the West Bank. Her mother, Montaha, told CPJ she was located by a lawyer in Damun Prison, south of Haifa.
On February 12, 2026, Taweel received a four-month administrative detention order from an Israeli court.
On June 11, 2026, Taweel’s attorney Ashraf Abu Sneineh of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society told CPJ that the Ofer Military Court had extended her administrative detention for an additional four months. According to Abu Sneineh, the detention order was based primarily on allegations that she posed "a threat to public security,” even though no indictment had been filed against her. He added that he had not yet received the official date on which the extension order was issued.
CPJ emailed the Israel Defense Forces for comment. Their International Press Desk responded that Taweel was “identified as a suspect due to involvement in terrorist activity” and that her case was transferred to Israel’s prison service.
