The Director of Communications at the Sudan Council of Churches and former editor of the now-banned Heritage newspaper, Arop was detained in March 1990, reportedly after requesting a visa to travel abroad for a conference. Authorities confiscated his passport and took him to Kober Prison. In October 1990 he was reportedly transferred to Halfa al-Jadida Prison.
