Journalist Amirhossein Rezaei, a political science student at the University of Tehran, was arrested by Iranian security forces on May 6, 2026, during a raid on his family home in the central city of Arak, in Markazi province, according to multiple local and rights group reports.
Rezaei had been laid off from the Iranian financial daily Donya-e-Eqtesad in March amid what some Iranian media described as a politically motivated purge. The Iranian Journalists Club said he had worked for the newspaper’s opinionsection during a brief stint at the publication.
Security agents reportedly searched the family home during the arrest and confiscated personal belongings, including electronic devices and books, before transferring Rezaei to an undisclosed location. His whereabouts, condition, and any charges against him remain unknown.
Rezaei’s Instagram account has since been deactivated.
CPJ’s email to the Iranian mission to the United Nations in New York requesting comment did not receive a response.
