Abdel Rahman al-Tanani, a Palestinian freelance journalist and a social media publisher for the local radio Zaman FM, was killed on October 18, 2023, when Israeli aircraft bombed his father’s home in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to news reports and his cousin, who spoke to CPJ.
Rahman al-Tanani, 26, was in the camp after he was displaced with his wife and son from their home in the Tawam area.
At dawn on Wednesday, Israeli warplanes targeted the house, killing al-Tanani, in addition to his brother and wife, according to his cousin, Ahmed al-Tanani. Abdel Rahman al-Tanani’s son was injured, and his wife suffered fractures that caused her a permanent disability.
CPJ became aware of al-Tanani’s death after the Hamas government media office announced it on October 27, 2024, more than a year after the bombing incident.
“Abdel Rahman’s mission in the radio was as a new media journalist, publishing via the website and social media pages, and of course, when he was martyred, he was still at work because he was martyred after about 11 days of the war,” said Rami Al-Sharafi, director general of Zaman FM.
CPJ’s email to the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk asking whether the military knew there was a journalist in the area it attacked and whether al-Tanani was targeted for his work did not immediately receive a response.
