Zişan Gür, a reporter for the leftist news website sendika.org, was among the many field reporters and photojournalists who were taken into custody after covering the protests erupted following the imprisonment of Istanbul’s opposition Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in late March 2025.
Istanbul police took Gür into custody on March 24 while reporting in the field, and he was released by a court under judicial control on March 27.
Gür and 65 other people were charged with violating Turkey’s related laws about public gatherings and not disassembling when asked by the police in June. The trial is set to begin on September 19.
CPJ’s email requesting comment from the chief prosecutor’s office in Mardin did not receive a reply.
