Al Quds Today TV reporter Islam Abed, 36, was killed along with members of her family in an Israeli drone strike on her apartment complex in Gaza City’s Al-Rimal neighborhood on August 31, 2025.
Abed, a mother of three, had visited her displaced relatives earlier that day. Her sister, Falestine Muhareb Abed, told CPJ: “At 2 p.m. on Sunday she visited us as if to say goodbye. She said she wanted to return home to prepare her youngest son Amir for his first day of school the next morning. At 7:20 p.m., an Israeli drone bombed the apartment, and Abed was killed along with her husband, their middle son, and her husband’s brother. Her eldest and youngest children were injured.”
Lamenting her death, Al Quds Today TV, affiliated with the pro-Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, said Abed was “a free voice conveying the truth from the heart of suffering. The outlet added, “Today, her own wound has become yet another testimony to relentless brutality and the systematic targeting of the voice of truth.”
Abed’s last report was published August 15, 2025, covered a free medical day at Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital amid difficult humanitarian conditions.
The family had endured nearly two years of forced displacement, moving repeatedly under bombardment.
Islam Abed held a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media from the Islamic University of Gaza and had worked as a reporter and editor with Al Quds Today TV for six years. During the war, she covered humanitarian stories, displacement, and civilian casualties.
CPJ emailed the IDF’s North America Media Desk seeking comment on Abed’s killing, but received no reply.
