On August 10, 2025, Al Jazeera media worker, assistant camera operator Mohammed Noufal, 28, was killed in a targeted Israeli strike on a tent housing journalists outside the main gate of Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital.
Noufal was previously counted as a journalist in CPJ’s database; his status was changed to media worker after a rigorous verification process in June 2026 that included desk research and talking to two credible sources from his outlet confirmed that he was a driver that transitioned to the role of assistant camera operator, tasked with the logistical aspect of moving videography equipment and setting it up in the field.
The attack that killed Noufal murdered Al Jazeera’s entire team of five in the city, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, as well as freelancer Mohammad al-Khaldi.
As of August 2025, CPJ’s emailed to the IDF’s North America Media Desk to request comment on the killings and additional detail on the terrorism allegations did not receive any response.
CPJ continues to review its documentation when credible new information emerges and updates its records where warranted.
