Iranian economic journalist, Shirin Saeedi, who has reported for state-run news outlets Hamshahri, Sarmaye, Tehran Emrooz, and Shahrvand, was detained on December 23, 2023. On May 1, 2024 she was sentenced to five years in prison for "assembly and collusion for action against national security” after she participated in international journalism workshops in South Africa and Lebanon.

Saeedi was released from Evin Prison on October 12, 2025. The conditions of her early release have not been made clear.

CPJ emailed Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York in late 2024 for comment about Saeedi and other imprisoned Iranian journalists but received no response.
