Abali, a reporter for the leftist weekly newspaper Atilim, was taken into custody during a police raid on the newspaper’s Mersin bureau. He was later charged with being a member of an outlawed organization and sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison. He is in Silifke-Mersin Prison.
