Nasheed, an editorial assistant at Sangu, was placed under six- month house arrest in August 1990 after writing an article that was published in the Sri Lankan paper The Island, and for giving interviews to the BBC critical of President Gayoom. He was charged with withholding information about Mohammed Shafeeq’s alleged terrorist act. He was taken to prison in November 1990 and put on trial.
