Al-Ashkar, a reporter for Worldwide Television News, was arrested on January 2, 1992 and taken to Gaza Central prison. That same day he was issued a deportation order which he is appealing to the High Court of Justice. Although Israeli authorities allege that he is a Fatah activist, al-Ashkar has not been charged.
