Restano, a former radio journalist and founding member of the Cuban Association of Independent Journalists (APIC), has been serving a 10-year prison term in Cuba since 1992 for organizing The Harmony Movement (MAR), a popular, nonviolent political movement. He was arrested on Dec. 20, 1991, and tried and convicted of rebellion in May 1992. In November 1994, Restano received CPJ’s International Press Freedom Award. He is being held in the Combinado del Este prison in Havana.
