Salam Mema, a 32-year-old freelance Palestinian journalist and head of the Women Journalists Committee at the Palestinian Media Assembly, was killed after sustaining injuries when her home in the Jabalia refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip, was hit by an Israeli airstrike, according to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, the Palestinian Authority’s official news agency Wafa, The Coalition For Women In Journalism, and Airwars, a London-based nonprofit company that monitors civilian harm in conflicts.
The media assembly that Mema led is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and is intended to be a Jihad alternative for the Fatah-affiliated Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate.
According to the news sources, Mema was first reported dead in the initial airstrike on October 10, 2023. There were reports of her being pulled out from the rubble on October 13, but she was later pronounced dead on October 13, 2023.
Her husband, their young children, and other members of the family were also killed, according to the BBC and Airwars.
Thousands of Palestinians were killed in the first months of the Israel-Gaza war, which began on October 7 after Hamas militants attacked Israel, leaving about 1,200 Israelis dead.
